Climate + Food

The IGNITE Innovation Hub for Eastern Africa is the first of its kind for the World Food Programme (WFP), established in partnership with CARE Denmark to address challenges across climate resilience and food systems.  It aims to foster climate-resilient, inclusive and locally-led sustainable food systems. The hub is committed to leveraging local solutions to address local challenges, nurturing entrepreneurial ecosystems, and adding value to WFP and CARE’s programs. 

The IGNITE Innovation Hub for Eastern Africa; in partnership with WFP Ethiopia country Office, CARE Ethiopia and Iceaddis, is launching the first innovation programme in Ethiopia with the aim of identifying entrepreneurs solving challenges on the nexus of food systems and climate resilience.

Focus Areas

The IGNITE Climate Innovation Challenge aims to foster local solutions by encouraging the development and implementation of innovative approaches tailored to the specific needs of vulnerable communities in Ethiopia in Amhara and Afar regions. It seeks to enhance climate resilience through initiatives that address the impacts of climate change on food security and agricultural sustainability.

Furthermore, the challenge endeavors to empower entrepreneurs by providing a platform for them to showcase their ideas, receive support, and scale up their innovations for greater impact.

Additionally, it strives to catalyze collaboration by facilitating partnerships between stakeholders from diverse sectors to co-create and implement effective solutions to pressing climate challenges.

1. Market & Consumption:

Innovations that stimulate market demand for nutritious food commodities.

Solutions to enhance production and productivity of beneficiaries, with a focus on sustainable practices.

2. Climate Adaptive Agriculture

Leveraging solar/digital technologies for livestock product handling, processing, and marketing technologies 

Technologies and practices that improve agricultural productivity and resilience to climate change.

Development of digital-based disease diagnosis and reporting mechanisms

Development of disease-resistant seeds and climate-smart agricultural techniques.

   

 3. Water Resource Innovations:

Innovations in water resource management to promote efficient usage.

Solutions addressing water scarcity, quality, and accessibility in agricultural contexts.

    Applications can only be submitted through the relevant online form provided (please click here) and at local WFP and Care Offices (Applicants can collect forms and drop them off at the mentioned regional offices). The submissions should include a detailed description (through the application form) 
    Selection criteria: 
    1) Innovation: The degree of innovation demonstrated by the proposed solution, including its uniqueness, creativity, anad potential to disrupt existing paradigms.
    2) Impact: The potential impact of the solution in fostering climate-resilient, inclusive, and locally-led sustainable food systems, as well as its contribution to addressing food security challenges within the stated regions.
    3) Feasibility: The feasibility of implementing the proposed solution, including its technical viability, scalability, and sustainability over the long term.
    4) Alignment with Objectives: The alignment of the application with the goals and objectives of the IGNITE Innovation Hub, as well as its ability to contribute to the overall mission of fostering sustainable food systems in Ethiopia.
    5) Local Context: The extent to which the proposal demonstrates a strong understanding of local contexts, cultures, and needs, and its ability to leverage local solutions to address local challenges.

    The applicants can submit their entries in English and Amharic. 
  • Special provisions

    Compliance of submitted projects with these criteria will be verified as far as possible prior to presentation to the selection jury.
